Pumpkins for Halloween

Halloween is the time when you'll see pumpkins everywhere!

Carving a pumpkin is quite hard - the flesh is quite solid so it takes fair bit of effort until you've got the technique. Use the scoup out for pie!

You don't have to use pumpkin though! You can hollow out a melon too - this was really easy and I took out all the melon flesh and we ate that!

Originally Turnips were hollowed out but Irish immigrants found that pumpkins were more easily available and so used these instead.

This short video - just under a minute shows time lapse pictures of someone carving out a basic pumpkin face. They start by taking the top off, scouping it all out and then cutting in the face. Certainly worth a look if you've never seen it done.
